Derma Fillers

Q: The other day, I was browsing through our annual family holiday photos, when I noticed how much older I look in the most recent pictures than I did in the ones taken just three years ago. And I’m not even 50 yet! I am into a healthy and balanced lifestyle, so I wonder why my face doesn't seem to reflect this as well as it used to do. Please help me learn what I can do to brighten up my look once more.

A: What you're experiencing is common for people around your age, and is simply a result of facial volume loss. You see, as we age, our skin gradually loses collagen and fats which are responsible for making our skin look plump and firm. This makes the skin sag, causing drastic effects like hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes, and not to mention, the formation of deep lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, these can be remedied by the injection of Derma Fillers, where are precisely introduced to fill hollow areas of the skin and restore facial volume.

Q: That sounds promising. How exactly does it work?

A: There are various types of fillers available in the market. In my case, I use JUVEDERM Derma Fillers which come in three variants, and are used to address different types of problems. The specific variant for facial volume enhancement is Voluma, which is directly administered in small doses into the desired treatment area. It works just like air to a deflated balloon-it fills the void and brings back the original shape and volume of the treated area.

This only takes about 10 to 20 minutes, so if you’re looking to make a quick visit to your doctor for a treatment, this is the procedure for you.

Q: Great! What about the other variants? What do they do? Can they also help solve my problem?

A: Yes. The other two are Ultra Plus and Volbella. Ultra Plus addresses wrinkles around the mouth and nose, which are commonly known as laugh lines and marionette lines. Meanwhile, Volbella is quite versatile because it can be used to enhance lip volume and shape, as well as to treat tear troughs and lift sunken eyes. There's another product, Redensity II by Teosyal, which uses hyaluronic acid and a derma-restructuring complex of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, to treat dark circles and hollows around the eyes.

The application of these fillers on their respective areas of use would greatly help in shedding years off your look because your face will look refreshed and healthier after the treatment.

Q: This sounds like those treatments I saw being offered in clinics in a nearby mall. Is it ok to get it done there?

A: I would highly recommend that you be selective of where to avail of this type of procedure, and only choose to get it done by a certified physician trained to administer derma filler injections, preferably a board-certified plastic surgeon. The procedure, while minimally-invasive, requires precision and accuracy, which implies not only training in the performance of this type of procedure, but also a good grasp of facial anatomy. Remember, in any type of injection procedure, sensitive blood vessels and tissues are always involved, so you want to minimize the risks as much as possible by entrusting the treatment with a doctor who is experienced and skilled in the field.

Q: What should I expect during and after the treatment?

A: There's minimal pain involved-nothing more serious than getting your skin pricked by a fine needle to introduce the filler into the skin. After treatment, you can expect some swelling and redness, but this will disappear in a day or two. You can also resume your normal activities immediately, except that, it would be best to refrain from applying make-up for at least 2 weeks, and to avoid strenuous physical exercises for 3 to 4 weeks. Results usually last for about 24 months, depending on the specific filler used and the treatment area.
