Men want and need it, too

Debunking stereotypes on cosmetic procedures

The idea that only women should be conscious of the way they look is so yesterday.

Nowadays, it is just as important for men to spend some added effort to look their best, and this requires going beyond routine-which usually just means a good shower and a passable outfit to boot-and actually bothering to employ other measures to ensure that that those power suits are complemented by dashing good looks.

A prime example of this can be seen among middle-aged male Hollywood celebrities who seem to only look better with age. Think George Clooney and his seemingly age-defiant debonair look.

Yes, a lot of it has to do with genes, but it is no secret that cosmetic procedures play a lot of part, too.

In fact, recent statistics obtained by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) show that in the US, more men are now availing of aesthetic treatments, with an overall increase of 43% in the last five years since 2010, for both surgical and non-surgical procedures. In particular, the latter type of procedures has achieved the biggest boost among male patients, with Botox injections and Derma fillers using Hyaluronic Acid as the top treatments.

It doesn't take rocket science to grasp why this is the case, as non-surgical procedures are fairly easy to avail of, and usually deliver promised results without requiring long recovery periods or high tolerance for pain and discomfort. They are also very effective in enabling patients to maintain a healthy and youthful appearance by getting rid of the major signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines, so long as administered by a certified plastic surgeon with the training and credentials to perform the same as safely as possible.

Recently, non-invasive procedures have also joined the mix and further upped the ante as far as non-surgical treatments are concerned. Now, procedures such as facial contouring can be done without the need of a needle or any other minimally-invasive equipment, because machines such as Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound waves to tone the skin, are available to give the face that chiseled shape, which many men desire to have.

With this arsenal of procedures available to men, there is no longer any excuse to say that only women can do something to enhance their natural features. It would be the height of naiveté to continue thinking in such manner, which only serves to uphold the prevailing stereotype that cosmetic procedures are only for women.

As shown by the same study of ASAPS, the trend of more and more men turning to aesthetic procedures is expected to continue and gain more momentum, primarily because it provides them with a means to remain competitive in an ageist and stiff job market, where a youthful appearance can spell the difference between making and breaking one’s career. As vain as it may sound, one’s appearance also has a huge impact on the kind of first impression that one will leave on other people, which is crucial in establishing rapport in professional and business endeavors.

Does the same ring true as far as the Philippines is concerned? Presently, maybe not up to the same extent. However, with the booming industry of aesthetic plastic surgical and non-surgical procedures, it would not be surprising to find the same trend here within the next few years, as far as males are concerned.

Indeed, cosmetic procedures are just as handy for men as they are for women, as they can supply that necessary boost of confidence to enable one to achieve successes in different aspects of life, whether it be in one's career, relationship, or simple daily interactions. If it could help them improve the quality of their life, there’s no stopping these men from booking that first session with their doctor.
