Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is the procedure of choice for treating ear defects or deformities which are present among individuals either at birth or as a result of an injury. It is a technique that corrects or improves the position, shape or proportion of the external structure of the ears.

The treatment is deployed to correct overly prominent or large ears, characterized by the rare medical condition known as Macrotia, by repositioning the ears closer to the head or reducing their size. Commonly, children aged between 4 and 14 years old are the beneficiaries of this treatment, which may or may not be covered by insurance policies.

An important consideration in performing ear surgery is the natural shape and proportion of the ears relative to the face. The procedure is designed to provide optimal balance on the facial anatomy; as such the extent of correction or improvement will depend on the needs of each patient. When done correctly by an expert plastic surgeon, the surgical procedure can provide tremendous advantages on one’s appearance and self image.
