Liposuction (Suction-Assisted Lipectomy)

Liposuction is an aesthetic surgical procedure for eliminating unwanted fat deposits found on different parts of the body, including the neck, upper arms, chest area, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles; and on the face, including the chin and cheeks.

The most traditional method of performing this procedure is with the use of a tube and vacuum equipment that sucks out localized fat deposits on the treatment area/s. This is known as Suction-Assisted Liposuction or SAL. Further, the tumescent technique, in which saline solution containing a local anesthetic is infused into the targeted fat cells, can be deployed to make the process of fat suction safer and easier, as well as reduce post-operative bruising and swelling.

A new technique called Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is also available for the removal of large volumes of fat, or for cases involving fibrous body areas. This technique utilizes an ultrasound device that is inserted into the skin to dissolve or liquefy fats before the same are suctioned off by the tube and vacuum.

The precise method to be used in performing this procedure will be decided upon by the plastic surgeon considering each patient’s specific problem, body characteristics and desired outcome. Thus, it is best to consult an expert physician to achieve optimal safety and results.

An important thing to remember about liposuction is that it is suited for eliminating stubborn fats, which are fats that are resistant from dieting and exercise. It is not a tool to achieve instant and drastic weight loss, as the same could not only be ineffective in the long-term but also dangerous; thus, individuals looking to undergo this procedure may need to bring their weight down to healthier levels through dieting and exercise first, before they can be considered good treatment candidates. Further, liposuction may be coupled with skin tightening procedures to complement fat elimination with skin and shape toning effects.

What patients need to know about Liposuction

Procedure Treatment area/s are first identified, after which, a small, thin tube (cannula) with a blunt tip is inserted into the same through a small incision on the skin, which allows the tube to suction off targeted fat deposits. Depending on each case, the procedure can be facilitated with various techniques, including the tumescent technique and the Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) technique.
Length 1 to 2 hours or more; UAL takes 20-40% longer than traditional liposuction
Anesthesia Local, epidural, or general
In/Outpatient Usually outpatient; however, extensive procedure may require a short inpatient stay
Side Effects - Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness and burning sensation
- For Tumescent procedures, temporary fluid drainage from the incision sites
- For UAL procedures, larger incisions for the tube/cannula
Risks - Asymmetry
- Rippling or bagginess of the skin
- Changes in skin pigmentation
- Skin injury; fluid retention
- Excessive fluid loss leading to shock
- Infection
- For UAL, thermal burn injury caused by heat from the ultrasound device
Recovery Patients may be back to work in 1 to 2 weeks, and can resume more strenuous activities in 2 to 4 weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising may be achieved after 1 to 6 months, or longer in some cases; the use of tumescent or UAL technique may decrease post-operative bruising and swelling.
Duration of Results Provided that the patient maintains reasonable diet and exercise, results are permanent.
