Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure for improving the size and/or appearance of the nose or for correcting various nose defects. Commonly known as nose surgery or nose job, it is the treatment of choice among individuals who are unhappy about the size and/or shape of their nose, or are experiencing breathing problems brought about by physical nose irregularities.

Nose surgery can be performed to reduce or increase the size of the nose, or to change the angle between it and the upper lip for better facial proportions. It is also useful for reshaping the tip or bridge of the nose to achieve a more symmetrical appearance. It can also be used to remove prominent humps on the nose bridge.

Besides these aesthetic purposes, nose surgery can also provide the benefit of relieving some breathing difficulties, when the procedure is complemented by surgery on the nasal septum. In such a case, the procedure may be covered by medical insurance.

Depending on the specific problem, the surgeon may use various techniques to produce the desired result, which may include accessing the bones and cartilage supporting the nose through incisions made with either the open or endonasal approach. The former involves incisions made outside the nose, which are connected with other incisions inside the nose through a small access incision at the base of the nose. This will produce a small scar at the base of the nose that will ultimately be barely visible. The latter involves incisions made inside the nasal passages, resulting to invisible scars after surgery.

To achieve natural results, it is best to use autologous cartilage grafts taken from the nasal septum, or from the ears or ribs. Implants, fillers or fat grafts may also be used to correct deformities or increase the volume of the nose. It is common to use Silicone or Gortex implants among Asian noses.

What patients need to know about Nose Surgery

Procedure The treatment area is numbed and incisions are made using the approach deemed most appropriate by the surgeon. The bones and cartilage supporting the nose are then accessed to add/remove/adjust them depending on the desired result. Implants, filler or fat grafts may be used to change the shape of the nose or smoothen out its deformities.
