Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Male breast reduction is a procedure that is performed on males who have overly developed breasts and nipples, characterized by the condition called Gynecomastia, which is a cause of social stigma and self-consciousness among males. It involves VASER liposuction and/or excision to reduce the size of male breasts to normal and more masculine proportions.

The procedure will either utilize VASER liposuction or excision, or both, depending on the cause of oversized male breasts. If it is largely because of the presence of excessive fatty deposits, VASER liposuction, which is liposuction facilitated by the use of ultrasonic energy for more precise fat removal, is more likely to be deployed by the physician. Meanwhile, excision, which involves the removal of excess glandular tissue, combined with liposuction, is the more appropriate technique to be utilized if the problem has to do with the overabundance of glandular tissue in the breast area. Puffy nipples caused by gynecomastia are usually treated with a combination of both techniques.

Gynecomastia can be solved by mere dieting and exercise, if the only source of the problem is excessive fat accumulation. However, in cases where the problem persists despite committing to these two methods, male breast reduction becomes the only viable alternative. Further, while gynecomastia is often not associated with any serious medical problem, it is still important to rule out the same before the procedure is performed to ensure effective correction of the problem, and to avoid the occurrence of any serious health complications.

To maintain the results of this procedure, patients are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle consisting of exercise and a balanced diet, as fat accumulation could still lead to enlargement of the breasts. The procedure is sometimes covered by medical insurance.

What patients need to know about Male Breast Reduction

Procedure In liposuction to reduce male breasts, excess fats are removed from the breasts by inserting a small, thin tube (cannula) with a blunt tip into small incisions placed around hidden areas of the breasts, and using the same to suck out the fat cells. For excision, an incision is commonly made on the nipple area, through which excess glandular tissue are removed using a scalpel; liposuction may complement this technique for better results.
