Post-Bariatric Surgery

Post-bariatric surgery refers to surgical body contouring procedures for reducing excess skin and fat that remain after one undergoes significant weight loss. This may include lipectomy, tummy tuck, upper arm lift, breast lift, thigh lift, and other techniques, which are performed to remove sagging skin caused by dramatic weight loss on areas like the face, neck, upper arms, abdomen, breasts, buttocks, and thighs, in order for the body’s normal shape and proportions to be restored.

Individuals who have just lost drastic weight from bariatric surgery, or dieting and exercise may not immediately undergo this treatment. Instead, they are strongly advised to wait until after their weight has stabilized, so as to ensure that results from the procedure are not put to waste or rendered ineffective by further weight fluctuations.

The surgery may be consisted of multiple procedures on different problematic parts of the body, performed one after the other in a single session, or on a staggered basis. Thus, it is crucial to develop a unique treatment plan for each patient to determine the best approach of performing several required procedures, as each one can impact the outcome of the rest.

Patients who have undergone post-bariatric surgery are normally left with permanent scars on the treatment areas. Experienced plastic surgeons can decrease the visibility of such scars by strategically placing the incisions that cause them in the natural creases and inconspicuous parts of the body.

It is crucial to remember that while the results of this procedure can last for a significantly long time, they can be adversely affected by bad lifestyle choices that can lead to weight gain. Also, skin sagging may still gradually occur as a natural effect of aging and other environmental factors.

What patients need to know about Post-Bariatric Surgery

Procedure Excess skin and fat are removed through incisions made on the treatment areas. It may consist of multiple procedures on different body parts to achieve ideal proportions.
Length Several hours, depending on the procedure/s to be done
Anesthesia Usually general; or local with intravenous sedation depending on the body part.
In/Outpatient Usually inpatient
Side Effects - Temporary pain, swelling, bruising, redness, itchiness, numbness, and tenderness
- Permanent scarring
Risks - Allergic reactions
- Hematoma or seroma
- Infection and bleeding
- Changes in sensation on the treated areas
- Damage to underlying structures
Recovery The recovery period will depend on the specific procedure/s performed. Typically, swelling and numbness take months to resolve, while the appearance of scars take 3 months to 2 years to improve. Sutures and drains can be removed in 2 to 3 weeks, after which normal activities can be resumed. However, at least 6 weeks may be needed before strenuous activities can be resumed.
Duration of Results Results are typically permanent barring pregnancy or significant weight change; however, aging can still affect skin elasticity, which may result to sagging. Meanwhile, if the procedure involves implants, results may not be permanent as the need to change the implants may arise.
