Ultherapy is a cosmetic skin treatment that uses an FDA-approved ultrasound device to stimulate the skin’s ability to produce collagen, thereby giving the effect of lifting, toning, and tightening loose skin on different areas of the face and chest. Through this mechanism, skin that has gone wrinkly and droopy due to old age, gravity and other environmental factors can regain its more youthful elasticity and texture.

The procedure can be performed to address mild to moderate skin sagging on the face and neck, as well as fine lines on the eye area. Also, it can be used for facial contouring to reduce the roundness of one’s face, or to eliminate a double chin.

What sets Ultherapy apart from other similar treatments is that it doesn’t involve any surgical or invasive step to produce desired results. Instead, it uses ultrasound energy to reach deep into the skin without physically piercing through its surface.

The ultrasound component enables the device to produce images that will allow the physician to see the deep areas of the skin that requires treatment. At the same time, it delivers ultrasound energy to the said areas to stimulate collagen production.

Although this procedure is completely non-surgical and non-invasive, it is still important that it be operated only by a physician with years of expertise in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery, as well as training in handling this specific device. This is not only to ensure optimal results but also patient safety, because incorrect usage of the machine can lead to rare side-effects, such as permanent scarring on the treated area.

What patients need to know about Ultherapy

Procedure The skin is first cleansed, and ultrasound gel is then applied on the specific treatment area. A handheld ultrasound device is then placed directly upon the skin to allow the physician to see ultrasound images of the deep layers of the skin, and to administer ultrasound energy that will trigger collagen rejuvenation in the same.
Length 30 to 60 minutes
Anesthesia None or local anesthesia or oral sedation
In/Outpatient Outpatient
Side Effects - Temporary and slight redness, swelling, tingling, bruising, numbness and pain
Risks - Contraindications include wounds or lesions, severe or cystic acne, or active and/or metallic implants in the treatment area
- Permanent scarring from improper use
- Numbness of the ear
- Feeling of weakness in the lower lip
Recovery There is no required recovery period because of the procedure’s completely non-surgical and non-invasive nature. Patients can immediately resume their daily activities post-treatment.
Duration of Results Initial effects can be immediately seen, but optimal results may be observed in 2-3 months, and further improvements can possibly still occur in 6 months. Results can last for about a year before touch-up treatments can be availed of to keep the natural effects of aging at bay.
